It's always having people over that motivates us to finish house projects. Are we the only ones? A Memorial Day party can be thanked then, for the push I needed to finally get the living room a little bit more spruced up.
First off, the mantle:
The nice folks over at Racks and Stands were kind enough to let me try out this sunburst mirror which I was hoping would be just the trick over the fireplace. I was a little worried that the gold might not work with our color scheme, but it's subtle enough that I really think it works.*
The painting on the right there was painted for us as a housewarming gift by a friend's mom. Do you believe people can be this talented? It's definitely one of our most prized possessions. (Thanks Mrs. Miller!)
A couple of Ikea vases round out the display, and once in awhile they're accompanied by some fresh flowers (we have our friend Grace to thank for these!).
Next up, a project that seemed simple enough but managed to elicit a few curse words during execution nonetheless. I got these frames (super cheap) from Joann's fabric and made prints of a few of our favorite wedding/engagement/honeymoon photos in black and white. I had to convince the hubs a bit on this one, as he's not too excited about decorating with photos of ourselves (understandably).
I know gallery walls can be controversial- do you guys like the look? I tried to pick photos that weren't too "LOOK AT US!" but couldn't resist the mushy one there of our first dance. It makes me smile everytime I see it, so I guess even if you all don't like it, it's staying for now. :) These will be easy enough to switch out if we want to put different pictures up in the future.
The hanging of these frames wouldn't have been too difficult if the frames themselves had been of better quality, but we quickly discovered that the positioning of the hooks on the back was different on each one. Kind of a pain, but after a few extra measurements we were good to go. Thank goodness for the patience of my husband though- which exceeds mine 99.9% of the time.
Duncan has more patience than me too.
The last finishing touch in the living room is the one I am the most excited about. It deserves its very own post, so here is just a little sneak peek for you.
More pictures to come very soon!
*Full disclosure: Yes, I was given the mirror for free in return for blogging about it, but I am under no obligation to give it a positive review. If I thought it stunk, I'd tell you guys, I promise!
