My husband is currently spending every evening after work holed up behind sheets of plastic in the future nursery refinishing the hard wood floors. This is a sawdust-covered, loud, and sweaty job. The fact that I'm currently growing a human gets me out of said job (although come to think of it, I wasn't much help when he redid the dining room floors last spring and I was decidedly unpregnant at the time. Oops.)
Since he's putting in all of this hard work, it's my responsibility- no, my duty- to work equally hard brainstorming ideas for the design of the nursery, no?
First off, here's what we're working with...
When we bought our house, the room looked like this:

Creepy man over uncovered fireplace does not exactly scream comfy nursery, does it?

Back when I actually contributed to house renovating, I painted it for its brief stint as an office/extra guest room in Benjamin Moore's Hush:
Colors:
No pastels here. I want vibrant, fun, and bright. I've decided to use this fabric swatch for inspiration:
It's Alexander Henry's 2D Zoo in Pool, and yes, I realize that this print is to the nursery world what Feel Script is to the wedding world (read: totally overused). And I don't care because I love it. The bedding will be made of this and a couple other bright prints that coordinate. The nursery has white trim and a white chair rail (Benjamin Moore Decorator's White to be exact) that will be staying. I'm thinking of painting different shades above and below the chair rail, giving a feel like this:
Here are the Benjamin Moore colors I'm going to try:
Baltimore Sky with Pacific Palisades

or Madison Avenue with Meridian Blue

Furniture:
My brother and his wife have generously let us borrow their crib and changing table.

After a lot of debate, I think we've decided to splurge on a nice rocker... this one is the frontrunner:
Land of Nod Attractive American Rocker

In Ocean Blue (which coordinates with our living room furniture in case we want to use it there someday):

Rug:
I'm really torn on which direction to go with a rug...
White:

Bright:

Somewhere in between:

I'm leaning towards white to balance out all the bright colors elsewhere, but is that a terrible choice for a kid's room?
Any thoughts?

I like the rocker! for carpeting: I vote for the "somewhere in between" blue strip-y rugs, I think they'll hide stains better than the other options
ReplyDeleteCan we pause for how jealous I am that your child will have both a fireplace and built-ins in the nursery? *sigh* Love.
ReplyDeleteI vote for whichever rug will be able to relocate in your home somewhere - you'll end up redoing the room in a few years time & you may end up getting something new.
No, I LOVE the bright colors! I am totally the same way...no pastels for my unborn baies either...bright and happy!! Love all of you choices!! :)
ReplyDeleteI know you've painted a lot in your house, as have I, but I caution you on using tourquoise. He may hate it in 5 years (or sooner). I can see how it could be a little girly? I personally love the colors but we have a spare room that will become a nursery and it's a tan color (similar to what you currently have) and I'm going to leave it as is and just do something fun over it so that as the baby gets older the paint isn't needing to be redone again. Just a thought.
ReplyDeleteThat baby is going to have the coolest room ever. Love the rocker - it looks so comfortable :)
ReplyDeleteI love the color palette! I just started following your blog, do you know the sex of the baby?
ReplyDeleteLove your thought process! It will be so fun to see how it goes. We painted our "Someday" baby room MS paint Heavenly Blue. When I purchased it the lady at the check out asked what room it was for. I said "Our someday baby". She said, "Well I hope it's a boy!" The funny thing is I love blue for boys and girls! Well, as long as there is a lot of pink added for the girl to balance the blue. Anyway, I know this has nothing to do with you nursery....more just to do with how EXCITING it is to plan for a baby. Have fun!
ReplyDeleteooo great ideas Em, I like the poke-a-dot rug! I can't wait to consult in person next weekend!! Have you thought about greens instead of blues? I just think blue gets overwhelming... just be though.
ReplyDeleteWell, I certainly wouldn't choose white with a baby! haha
ReplyDeleteI say somewhere in between for the rug, bright everywhere else. Rugs are too expensive, it would suck if you got sick of it.
About the rocker, I would say try them out. my friends have the "regular" wooden rocker from Babys R Us and it's really comfortable in my opinion and they can get in and out of it easily. I don't know if you'll sink into a fabric cushion rocker or get "stuck" to it too easily with the fabric on fabric action. Also, Mrs. bee had a little issue of not being to get hers into their apartment with the narrow doorways so make sure you measure. I've used that fabric before to make blankets for my friends. I love it. I like your idea of the two blues. My friend did that with pinks and I liked that the top color was more muted. It allowed you to put a lot of color in the form of wall art and toys on the walls.
ReplyDeleteI love the colors.
ReplyDeleteI love that print!
