You guys. Thank you so much for taking the time to fill out my silly little survey! It was awesome to hear from so many of you. But... hello, TWO HUNDRED AND NINETY EIGHT of you responded. Where have you guys been?! It would be so fun to hear from you more often. A few of you mentioned that you'd never commented before because you feel weird or funny about leaving comments. You must not know that comments are like crack to bloggers. So speak up more often... it will make my day :)
Enough about me... who are you? Well, you're all between 20 and 36 years old except for one of you in your "mid-50s" and one who left a cryptic "older than walkmans, younger than dirt" riddle. Your ages form a perfect bell curve centered at 29. I broke out ma fancy math skills and so I can tell you that the average reader here is 28.7, the median age is 28 and the mode is 29. (Nerd alert.)
You hail from all over the country, and more of you call California home than any other state. Texas is popular too, but this isn't exactly groundbreaking seeing that those are some big ol' states. Tied with Texas is my adopted home state of Maryland, including a couple of you who live in the town where I work... is it creepy or cool to think we probably pass each other on the highway regularly? Also represented: Canada, New Zealand, Australia (I spent six months in your gorgeous country in college!), Mexico, Germany, UK, Singapore, and Costa Rica (jealous).
Only 31% of you have kids, but 16% of you are pregnant, and 27% of you hope to add kids to your families "soon". That leaves 26% of you without kids or intentions of them in the near future... thanks for sticking around despite the all-baby-all-the-time vibe going on around here lately.
I'm a part of the 28% of you that read blogs on your phone, and I'll admit also to being a part of the 35% that read from work. A majority of you, 68%, read this blog (and I'm assuming many, many others if you're anything like me) through Google Reader. Have you guys discovered the "next" feature? You'll find it under settings, in "goodies", and it's awesome. An easy way to click through your reader while seeing the actual blog you're reading instead of a feed.
Almost half of you left me a comment, and they were all so ridiculously sweet I can't even believe it. You called me lovely, nifty, fabulous, swell, and kind of awesome. I'd call all of you the same. Blogging is a freaking self-esteem booster, I'll tell you what.
And now, if I may, I'd like to call some of you out :)
One of you described reading my breastfeeding post while you were in the hospital, and said that it helped you be successful in your goal to breastfeed your second baby even though it didn't work out with your first baby. That gave me chills. When I sit here blogging in my sweatpants I don't feel like I'm doing anything productive or important, and I realize that most of the time I really am not, but the thought that I made a difference for you in that way makes me so so happy.
I thought about adding a question to the survey along the lines of "do you know me in in real life and read my blog without me knowing?" but I was worried I'd be too weirded out if there were a lot of you. But one of you said you were in my sorority three years behind me, and I don't know who you are! To you I say, "w", and delurk, please :)
I'd like to say "I'm so glad you love it" to the one of you who bought your breast pump based on my recommendation, "exactly, and wasn't it awesome?" to the fellow natural birther who commented about your thoughts on relaxing during labor, and "don't worry, that would make for the most boring blog ever" to the person who asked me to please not start posting an outfit of the day.
I'm glad that so many of you like product suggestion or review-type posts (a lot of you requested more of them), because I really like writing them. I'll keep abusing my Amazon Prime membership just for you guys. And for those of you into cloth diapers (there are a lot of you!) I have a diaper sprayer system review post to write soon... get excited ;)
Thank you to the many of you who left your blog addresses. Many are new to me and I'll be checking them out. Fellow bloggers, I highly recommend heading over to polldaddy.com and setting up a little survey for your blog. Good stuff :)
{Can't post without a picture.... Finn can maneuver his way from crawling to sitting up now, and he's pretty darn proud about it.}

I would just like to mention that today is one of those days where my head is somewhere else. I just saw your blog post and so I went to take your survey. I have no idea why I said where I saw you talking about the survey. It's the second time I've had a bury my head in the sand type of moment today. I'll wait for one more and then I'll go home and go to bed early. :) The survey was a great idea, though!
ReplyDeletethis survey is a great idea! I follow along with your blog but don't comment as often as I should :-) I suppose I am a typical reader: 29, hope to add kids to my famly "soon", and I am reading from NY. I found your blog along the way and loved the title- (my maiden name is an O'.) I keep reading because you're a great writer & I love your product reviews.
ReplyDeleteI'm a post-weddingbee reader and rarely comment because I'm awkward (waves hello!). However, I also think your baby is the cutest thing I've ever seen, and even sent your twitpic of that adorable picture in this post to a few of my friends to comment on his cuteness!
ReplyDeleteI'm 25, from Tennessee, and babies are on our "one day" list, but not any time soon. I read pregnancy/baby/mommy blogs to feed the baby fever I have without causing my husband to break out in hives at the thought of fatherhood. Thanks for giving us a glimpse into your life!
Delurking now :) That's awesome you were able to get over 200 responses... and I too was really moved by your breastfeeding posts!
ReplyDeleteMe too re: breastfeeding post (you even came to my site to offer words of encouragement!) - I'm afraid of posting a survey because I don't think many people read my blog - it would be so sad posting the results of like, 3 people! :o)
ReplyDeleteOk, I didn't take the survey and I've never left a comment. But since you insist... :) I can't even remember how I found your blog but when I did, it was a shock to me to discover we were living parallel lives! My due date was 3/20/11 (delivered 3/27), and it was somewhere around preg week 24. We were both taking 'belly pics', decorating the nursery, and wondering how this was all going to work out. Now I can stop back in and see which products you are loving, how big baby is and what he's up to (sitting? we're close, but... and those teeth! none here yet!). I've enjoyed 'sharing' pregnancy and mommyhood with you- and I'll be back for more!
ReplyDeleteI'm one of your youngest readers...I'm 21! I've been in a serious and very healthy relationship with my best friend of seven years (dating three). I can very clearly see a future with this guy and reading about your life with your college sweetheart helps quiet my tendencies to talk about the future too much. I know I need to live in the moment and that I'll get there! But I just love all things babies and family and houses so I love reading about your life!
ReplyDeleteI've never seen When Harry Met Sally, but I was once told this quote and never forgot it: when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want to the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.
So that's where I am right now. :)
I also bought my breast pump on your recommendation, though I haven't used it yet. My baby is only 3 weeks old and I don't have to go back to work until January. It feels weird to say that I can't wait to try it :)
ReplyDeletethat figures - my diaper sprayer is actually arriving today (Amazon (Mom) prime of course) but i'm looking forward to hearing your reviews!
ReplyDeletehello! i rarely comment, though since starting my own blog a few weeks ago i know how good the "comment crack" really is so i'll be commenting more. first off - thanks for the tip about the next button on google reader. it is aaaaamazing! second- finn is adorbz, just saying. third - i came to this blog from weddingbee and then again for the breastfeeding post, love it all, will definitely be drawing from that along with cloth diapers/natural birth etc down the line when we decide to expand our family "one day" :)
ReplyDeleteI am a lurker who hardly posts as well!! I am one of those who don't live far from you, and actually met you at a bee meetup a couple years ago (not long after your wedding) in DC. I may secretly hope to run into you and Finn somewhere just so I can get the cuteness first hand, though hubs and I are in the "no babies for us" camp. Doesn't mean I don't love them! :)
ReplyDeleteDelurking to say / wave hi! I didn't see your survey post until it was a bit too late, but I would have been one of your 'average readers' - I'm 30, live in Vancouver, Canada, and my husband and I are currently expecting our first child - due in two weeks! (eek!) We are very excited though, and seeing your adorable posts about Finn and how wonderful he is just makes me look forward to mommyhood even more!
ReplyDeleteI have also appreciated all your posts on baby gear and breastfeeding - I've based a lot of my 'must-haves' on helpful posts like yours - I think that I consider some of the bloggers I read regularly to be 'like-minded' - so thank you so much for all the tips!
Responding to the survey was fun and all but I'm so glad that you posted a blog about the results! It's kind of neat, even for a reader, to know who else is in my crazy life boat! And SO looking forward to more product review posts and cloth diapering posts. : )
ReplyDeleteOk, finally delurking to say hello :) Followed you over from Weddingbee and have been following along ever since. I really enjoyed your pregnancy posts, since my husband and I just had a baby girl in July. Even though you were a few months ahead of me, it was fun to see what I was in for, and now it's so neat to watch Finn grow, since he's just a few months older than my baby. I've also enjoyed the breastfeeding and cloth diapering posts, since we do both, although the diapers are currently giving me fits - repelling issues...ugh! Oh, and like others, I really appreciate the product review posts. So helpful! Keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteAlso delurking.... I may or may not have been the person that commented on relaxing during labor :). I know I said something like that, but my new mommy-brain is mushy a lot of the time. Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you for giving me reading material to look forward to in the 5 spare minutes I have every week :)!
ReplyDeleteWow - so cool to see your stats! I've really wanted to do a similar type of survey on my blog, but I was worried no one would respond! Perhaps I have more lurkers than I know of...
ReplyDeletedelurking ... Hi I am Amber, I have followed you since WeddingBee. I have 3 kids, 9, 7 and 4 months. I enjoy reading I just hate clicking over from google reader to comment LOL
